ABOUT THE WORK
Lines between cognition and art making are blurred, merging two distinct worlds into one. In memory, the act of repetitive practice aids in the retainment of concepts within working memory. In gesture drawing, the act of expressive, rapid, mark making captures raw energy and movement. Psychology intersects with gestural and figurative drawing, confronting us with the uglier, dirtier, parts of ourselves that we so often become, but ignore.The work is primarily done in charcoal on newsprint/kraft paper, as an ode to traditional gestural drawing materials. The work began to materialize on newsprint initially, then transferred over to kraft paper as a critique on hierachal structures and gallery aesthetics. Additionally, every piece is restricted to a time limit to mirror gesture drawing exercises in which the artist must capture the movement of the figure within 1-5 minutes, forcing the artist to rely on hand coordination and eye movement between figure and drawing. The smaller work is constricted into 20–30 minute intervals and the larger work into 40 to 60 minutes.
